While most air conditioning systems work efficiently for many years, there are a few problems that can develop. One of the more common problems with an air conditioning system is a system getting low on refrigerant.  Refrigerant is a gas that is compressed into a liquid to transfer the heat out of the home where it is expelled to the outside.  When the system is low on refrigerant, it cannot effectively transfer the heat and the air conditioning system does not work as well as normal.  While the air conditioning may offer some cooling when low on refrigerant, the home will not be as cool and the unit will run longer than normal.

The compressor of the unit transforms the refrigerant from a gas into a liquid.  The liquid is then pumped through the coils inside the home where it evaporates back into a gas.  This evaporation process is responsible for the cooling or removal of heat from the home.  If the air conditioning compressor stops working, there is no cooling of the home.

From the compressor the hot, high pressure gas flows into the condenser. Here the pressurized hot refrigerant vapor is cooled by the condenser fan as it moves through the finned coils. If you looked at the air conditioner part outside a house, look for the part that has metal fins all around it. The fins help dissipate the heat.

The liquid then enters the evaporator, through a very small hole, and the liquid turns back into a gas and begins to evaporate. During the evaporation process, it also extracts heat from the air and cools it. The cold air is then blown out of the air conditioner and circulates throughout the house by the air ducts.

As you can see, an air conditioning system is really quite simple and can be repaired in many cases. In most instances, homeowners will find that the least expensive option to have air conditioning working in the home again is to repair the existing unit.  In addition, under most circumstances, the repairs can be made to the air conditioning sooner than it could be replaced.
